AWLA's Mentoring SchemeAWLA set up its own Mentoring Scheme in June 2000. The scheme involves more experienced colleagues meeting with more junior solicitors and discussing career goals and difficulties women may experience on the way. The discussions are not meant to replace on-going file supervision, but are designed to comprise general advice. As the relationship develops, the mentor becomes a willing and confidential ear for the junior practitioner. AWLA began the mentoring scheme in response to an alarming lack of progress for women in the profession over the last 10 years. Women are not being made partners as rapidly as men are. Those who remain employed solicitors earn significantly less than their male colleagues and perhaps on a more worrying note, women have been leaving the profession altogether. The mentoring scheme is one way that AWLA can respond to the disappointing statistics that abound. We hope that by providing mentors to less experienced lawyers they will feel truly supported in the profession and remain practicing in the law. We conduct matching up sessions every 3 months or so, so you can join in the scheme at any time. To join the scheme, first you need to join AWLA, then once a member of the organisation, you can email Deidre Bourke and the appropriate forms will be forwarded to you. The Mentoring Coordinators for 2007 are
